PEACE and the Clarion County League of Women Voters invite you to a public forum on March 19th at 7:00 P.M. at the Grace Lutheran Church, 417 Madison Ave, Clarion.  Featured speakers are Ben Price and Chad Nichols, members of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund.  CELDF has been assisting people to secure the right to local, community self-government and the reversal of political, legal and cultural doctrines that interfere with that right.

Under Pennsylvania's current Constitution, the structure of law systematically strips communities of the power to adopt laws to protect their own health, safety and land.  Ben and Chad will discuss ways that local communities can work to secure these rights by self rule of local government.

Please join PEACE and the League for this important discussion about the power of local government.  Refreshments will be served.  It promises to be a lively discussion.

CELEBRATING 136 SUMMERS OF FRESH AIR FUN!

The Fresh Air Fund celebrated its 136th summer of serving New York City children! Thank you to all our dedicated host families for opening your hearts and homes to a New York City child. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children experience simple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, gazing at star-filled skies and creating memories that last a lifetime. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on how you can sign up to become a volunteer host next summer, please contact Anya Korshak at ext. 8931 or The Fresh Air Fund at 800-367-0003. Additionally, you can find more information online at www.freshair.org .

In celebration of “Read Across America” Week, students at Northside and Pinecreek Elementary Schools are getting ready for Bedtime Story Night to be held on Wednesday, March 6th, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.  Sponsored by the Brookville Area Education Association (BAEA), a teacher organization, the evening will promote the importance of reading.  The theme for the evening is Dr. Seuss and The Cat in the Hat.

Children will wear their pajamas and slippers, and bring their favorite stuffed animals.  Wonderful stories will be read by parents, guest readers, board members, and administrators.  To top off the evening, students will receive snacks and free books to take home.

Donations from BAEA, PATHS (Parents and Teachers Helping Students), the school district, and Turner’s  have contributed to making Bedtime Story Night a success for over 20 years.

Linda Coulson, a kindergarten grade teacher and chairperson for the event, attributes the success of the program to the teachers and staff at Pinecreek and Northside as well as the community volunteers.  “The teachers and support staff volunteer many after school hours planning and organizing Bedtime Story Night.  Providing a fun educational experience for our students is our top priority. We look forward to this event every year because our students love it.  Both the teachers and students are looking forward to wearing their PJ’s and slippers to school for Bedtime Story Night. We would also like to thank all of the community volunteers who read to the students. We have had over 40 volunteers to read during the past few years, which is wonderful. Thank you in advance to everyone who makes this event possible!”

Run, Walk, Roll, Against Bullying Oct 6th
Punxsutawney, PA: Every day, more than 160,000 children nationwide stay home from school to
avoid being bullied. Not only are the effects of bullying on a child felt immediately, but they
can also be lifelong – or even tragic. That’s why The Mentor Parent Program is inviting
communities to support this cause at its first‐ever Run, Walk, Roll Against Bullying on Saturday,
Oct. 6, as part of National Bullying Prevention Month.

Registration begins at 10am at Barcley Square in Punxsutawney. The event will be a 5k run or a 1 mile fun walk/roll which begins at 11:30. Participants bringing in $20 or more in donations will receive a t-shirt. There will be vendors there supporting our anti-bullying efforts, as well as, fun, food and a bake sale. Registration packets will be available at various business locations, or by calling 1-888-447-1431.

Bullying can lead to painful results not only for the youth who are bullied, but for the
students who engage in it, the school, and the whole community, said Kim Rhodes, Executive Director of The Mentor Parent Program. This is a very real and painful issue that kids are facing, but they don’t have to face it alone, and bullying can be prevented if we all work together.

All proceeds from the Run, Walk, Roll Against Bullying will benefit The Mentor Parent Progra

m.
The Mentor Parent Program exists to provide support and services to parents of children with disabilities through a coalition of united efforts of parent, educators, service providers, and professionals, to effectively meet the needs of children with disabilities in the rural Appalachian region of Pennsylvania.

The money that is raised will help support The Mentor Parent Program to continue to bring awareness to schools and communities by offering trainings, workshops, support groups, and education in 13 counties and 17 school districts. The Mentor Parent Program utilizes its many resources & training opportunities to help families and communities better serve their needs in the educational system. The Mentor Parent Program also helps families with resources that involve any child from birth to 26, & we have multiple resources available.
